OUR LABRADOR RETRIEVERS ARE SOLD WITH ONGOING SUPPORT

We will touch on topics that are important to us.

You and your family are preparing  for a new puppy addition to your home and the excitement can be very elevated in the days to come, from first days at home - nights, Feeding, Potty training & socializing, Crating, Spay & Neutering. And most of all the cost and expenses of bringing a Pet into your home. We have a brief outline for new owners and guidelines that has worked for us here at Jomarie Kennels.

PUPPIES  FIRST DAYS IN  NEW HOME

Please setup an area in your home that is quiet and relaxing for your Labrador, as the first days can be overwhelming. So the for your puppy a new home can be highly stressful for your Labrador... and very exciting for you. We strongly suggest you limit visitor and monitor children contact,  especially visitors with pets.  Older pets may not tolerate young puppies, as new puppies will want to play and don't know their limits YET......Don't take chances......An unmonitored encounter could be stressful enough for your puppy and can become withdrawn.... Don't take chances..  Monitoring  decreases incidents & issues, and children need to supervised at all times around pets to protect both the Pet & Child. Keep noise levels low and Don't make assumptions from any incidents.... this would be a mistake  of  judgment. WE STRONGLY suggest you plan a friendly visit to your local Vet Clinic to pre-register before puppies Vet visit is required.

Our puppies are adult socialized and will have a set routine prior to departure and WE would like this continued with some adjustments of course.  New families or a mature member of the family can help in the adjustment period. This can take up to a week for a puppy to settle into his/her new home and surroundings.... so be prepared to give AT LEAST ONE WEEK or LONGER. Puppies need to be monitored by the owners and provided plenty of outdoors potty breaks, Don't forget to give lots and lots of Praise for a job well done.. this will need to be done often, and is necessary for progress in potty training... and again needs to be done after play, Napping, feeding and after a drink of fresh water, and for good behaviours. Give your puppy quick access to the outdoors  this will benefit  you and your puppy, and will get better in time. If at all possible avoid stairs in the home,  puppies are curious and stairs can be tricky and unsafe until mastered, you may need carry your puppy outside to a quick access route. Puppies CAN be introduced to stairs but, they need guidance, patience and monitoring for safety...and from falls.

If extra assistance is needed in your puppies daily routine ask for a Pet sitter or Pet walker to make a home visit....to exercise your puppy in YOUR YARD. It is strongly advised that you monitor your young PUPPY especially with your other household pets, stay away from other unknown animals as they may..  NOT HAVE HAD updated immunizations, as they could carry a harmful infections or disease that can seriously harm young puppies or pets. DON'T take your PUPPY roaming  to unknown areas  UNTIL FULLY VACCINATED INCLUDING RABIES, this includes Obedience classes and pet groups (They will ask for verification).  Reframe from Dog parks and unfamiliar areas you DON'T know, as they are subject to roamers of strange dogs, cats, racoons, foxes  etc.....Your puppy may have  ONLY  Partial Vaccinations and  without Total Vaccinations is at high risk of NOT being protected against Diseases' which can be present in the grounds and soil from other animals....,e.g.. Parvo which is a highly contagious disease that can do serious harm to Puppies or older frail pets.. If exposed to Parvo your pet will become very sick ...very fast and  it is FATAL, you will not know until your pet shows signs of this highly contagious fatal  diseases. If this happens WE DO NOT honour our 7 day Guarantee against illness or other diseases, especially if contracted after leaving the Breeders home. Your Veterinarian should be visited IMMEDIATELY  FOR DIAGNOSIS.

LIVING ARRANGEMENTS

Your Labrador Retriever puppy should be LIFETIME commitment so be prepared to give ongoing loving & interactive life by showing praise, love and guidance throughout your Labrador Retrievers lifetime, be prepared to accept his return of affection for many years to come. Your Labrador loves to be with his/her family members and will be dedicated to you, but also deserves  the rights to be part of the family, including proper living conditions this also means  LIVING INSIDE YOUR HOME especially at night with your family.

Any breed of animal.. especially Puppies like to chew.... this is fact... providing a safe area for your pet, INSIDE THE HOME  or crated is strongly recommended.  NO Labrador of ours SHOULD BE LIVING OUTSIDE.. NO MATTER WHAT.  Puppies will chew because of teething, comfort, play and even out of boredom and placing your pet outside unattended for many hours or even days because of this is NOT ACCEPTABLE.  Providing your pet with safe chew toys or Veterinarian approved chew toys  is  better known as good owner control and good pet ownership. Your Pet should never be left to  LIVE or be HOUSED outside in any kind of weather... THIS IS NOT ACCEPTABLE, dogs that are left outside will be subject to bad weather, thunder storms, pouring rain, outrageous heat and sun and subject to heat & sunstroke, most of all can't escape these conditions even with a dog house.  Other dangers to your dog include a risk of being an easy target, for other animals that roam freely, or individuals that have been known to tease/torment or torture and even seriously hurt or cause death without your knowledge, or owners unable to provide help when your pet is in a stressful situation. WE  DO NOT in anyway support  the  owners judgement of any pet tied up or chained to a stationary device, this can and will cause injury and increase your pets chances of being strangled by collars while trying to free themselves, this can cause trauma that you wouldn't even be aware of until it's to late. When left outside in Various weather conditions for extended periods of time your pet has no access to escape many night critters which..... could have rabies, and bugs that attack and harm your pets health.

The more involvement you provide in your pets  life style, the more your pet will in return  provide unconditional love, commitment,  and companionship to the fullest. Lack of interaction and isolating of any pet, increases and will cause behaviour changes, this could result  in  depression, jumping for attention, or other signs of growling, aggressiveness, dominance, or even attacking of other animals or you, as this is NOT YOUR PETS FAULT, but an error of the owner, and your dog will end up paying the price.

In the winter an outside dog house may be seem like a warm place for your pet to go, but when any dog is subject to the extreme cold temperatures, your dog  will encounter poor health, increased chances of frostbite and  NO access to warm and safe living quarters, especially improper drinkable drinking water that has froze. Without proper care from you ...no dog house is  safe  or heated enough to replace that  in home environment  your dog deserves from you. I strongly suggest that you have your pet live inside in a safe warm living area, even if it's in a designated area so he/she can be monitored with guidelines. Your Labrador will provide you with the utmost loving and loyal companionship imaginable, and always glad to see you no matter what with unconditional love.  There are a variety of safe controlled devices are on the market for your pet while outside such as Fenced yard, kennel runs, even the use of a invisible fences systems, IS positive controlled monitoring for your pet. This DOES NOT control nuisance animals  allowed to roam free, but protection for your Pet. Do your homework and ask around. Your Labrador or other pets you own are your responsibility. Sad or cruelty cases have been in the news/headlines about  irresponsible owners/handlers errors of repeated cases of  improper care from the authorities. There are Town and City By-laws for those that are neglectful to their pets of any kind this could or may result  to fines or even more serious measures, we have all heard  these in the past... Lets not be one. So Be kind to your pet.

Your pet also needs to be monitored for early morning to night toileting before being housed inside, night critters can be hiding.  Unfortunately some accidents do happen and as we know even with our children, so watch carefully and monitor. Our Pets are our responsibility and are just as important.

Dogs and Pets in our homes need direction from their owners so, be calm and consistent with proper commands or I strongly recommend either a puppy Kindergarten (completed Vaccinations & Rabies including Kennel Cough Vaccine) or Obedience classes. Many wonderful  Kennel clubs or Canine support groups are in your area to register with, ask around to neighbours, friends or your local Veterinarian Clinic.... get involved. It's like school for YOU and YOUR PET.. You might be surprised on the outcome its a great way to get out, have fun, and understand the breed....... BUT it all starts with YOU.

**CRATES**

Information sheet included in our Booklets
We do suggest the introduction of a Crating, a dogs natural instinct is to live in a den that provides protection from elememts while providing security and psychological satisifaction. This not recommended for use 24/7, but should be used for the positive controlled usage e.g.. sleeping, controlled playtimes, chewing, and good timeouts. In the first days/weeks of puppyhood feeding is crate permitted, if more then One pet is in the home and great for owners needing to stepping out for a short errands. Once introduced your pet will more then willing except this space as his own. This does not replace the socializing but provides a safe calm space your pet. This may need some time, but it is peace of mind.

There are different kinds of crates from....Vari-Crates which are a fibreglass enclosed shell that has a view window in the door and sides, that are great for in home use or Vehicle traveling and very safe as, MOST are Airline approved. Wire Crates are another as viewing can be monitored on all sides, with removable plastic and airflow is not restricted.

And as time goes on you may find your pet will be comfortable inside the crate all on their own.

Collars should be removed while in a crate for safety reasons.

**FEEDING**

Info sheet included in our Booklets

We use and Reommend Royal Canin

We provide feeding instructions for Puppies & Adults with amounts to be given at each feeding. Puppies will receive Complimentary food kits from Royal Canin. Fresh water should be provided through the day for good health. A good quality food is your pets best defence, and will promote good health.

Labradors are considered Large Breed animals and the feeding instructions on most food bags can be over rated. Most obesity is from over feeding in both Puppies and Adults, and this can be a serious complication to your pet. Follow Breeder or Veterinarians directions. WE DO NOT and we do not recommend feeding raw, table scrapes or cheaper dog food brands, some commerical brands aren't always better, some stores will sell you anything for business, so do your homework and search.

Ask your pets Dr. about food choices, Vet Clinics see the end results.

We do not advise the use of Rawhide bones, pigears or hooves as these can cause serious health issues and when swallowed they can choke easily, and big chunks that won't pass, and will be costly to owners, plus there has been problems with chemicals and sterilization of these products. Don't give real bones as they splinter and result in health and cost issues. You may be killing your pet with kindness.

 **Spay & Neutering**

Information sheet included in our Booklets

We strongly recommend that spay or neutering be done, this controls the pet population and is a good ownership.

Females:   Spay females at an early age of 6-8mths to avoid that first uncomfortable heat cycle, and will reduce the risk of uterine infections and cancer, and the risk of breast cancer in older female dogs, avoiding that heat cycle, reduces messy and inconvenient to you, and also protecting your pets lifetime of health. "What they've never known, they'll never miss". Some dogs even spayed or neutered will hump but this should discouraged in a positive way and redirected. Also neutered male dogs won't roam into your yard as freely, looking for that female, and reduces the risk of injury which can cause vehicle accidents and /or dog fights.

Males:   Neuter males between 6-8 mths, having this done will reduce the risk of infections & cancer in his testicles, it also reduces the risk later of prostate problems such as prostatic enlargerments, infections and prostatic cancer, which can all lead to urinary difficulties and even dealth, and protects your pets lifetime of health.

As a pet owner you reduce the chances of your pet wondering freely, reducing accidents from unwanted pregnacies and of vechile injuries and dog fights. You WON"Tchange that great personality, you only enhance this... females wont be upset by a heat & males wont roam, and you will have more time with your pet and not more time looking for your pet.

** Myths on Spaying & Neutering**

Dogs don't become fat from this surgery, as a matter most owners feel they need to increase food, making up for a few days of discomfort and then never decreasing the amount.  Fact is you should feed them the same as instructed or less by 10%, as this will keep their bodies lean.
